POSITION DESCRIPTION


The Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine invites applications for a 100% appointment as a Director of Diagnostic Medical Sonography Education in the Radiation Science Program, Department of Radiology. Appointment rank may be at the Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor level and to the instructional track. Appointment at the rank of Instructor (non-track) may also be considered. This position will provide oversight, coordination and leadership of the Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program by designing, planning, integrating, and evaluating curriculum, and managing enrollment, academic standards and teaching resources. Key areas of responsibility include, admitting, teaching, advising, and retaining students, designing, planning, integrating and evaluating curriculum.


KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY


Admit and retain prospective and current students for the Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program



  • Advise current and prospective students regarding admission, registration, course selections, graduation requirements, and post-graduation plans.

  • Make decisions regarding selection and admissions and advise students regarding reason(s) for denial of admission and how to improve acceptance potential upon request.

  • Inform students of available scholarships.

  • Complete post-graduation recommendations.


Enrollment Management



  • Oversee student background checks, UIHC and affiliate site compliance course completion, and CPR and student health pre-entrance requirements.

  • Oversee textbook requirements and MAUI course management.

  • Oversee human resource requirements for clinical assignments (ID badges).

  • Encourage student involvement in extracurricular activities.

  • Participate in designing projects or processes to increase program value.

  • Manage course enrollments & recommend curriculum or course changes to faculty and administration.


Academic Standards and Curricular Policies



  • Handle individual requests for exceptions to curricular requirements based on established criteria.

  • Identify recurring problems that may require further study.

  • Lecture specific units of didactic education.


Academic Program Management (Planning, Designing, Integrating, and Evaluating Curriculum)



  • Provide curricular development and administrative oversight to the Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program. Includes planning, designing, integrating and evaluating curriculum.

  • Provide oversight of program structure and daily operations.

  • Assign academic courses and evaluate program content, objectives and operating strategies.

  • Monitor profession for trends and implement innovative solutions to enhance Program services.

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive assessment/evaluation program to achieve desired results and measure effectiveness of the Program.

  • Collect and analyze Program data and make recommendations using an evidence-informed approach.

  • Strategic planning; propose, plan and develop initiatives to increase Program value.

  • Cultivate a quality academic environment; formulate the mission, goals, and objectives for determining educational quality of the Program.

  • Ensure effectiveness of all clinical affiliates is maintained through periodic review and evaluation.

  • Describe the key relationships and dependencies with other University of Iowa (UI) business functions.

  • Establish academic consulting processes for relevant external stakeholders.


Budget Oversight and Management



  • Develop and monitor financial reports to assess alignment with program goals.

  • Approve routine expenditures.

  • Provide functional and administrative supervision to assigned faculty.

  • Hire, develop and manage the performance of assigned faculty; assure faculty are compliant with UI policies and procedures.

  • Complete assigned faculty human resource functions (PAs, time off, compliance completion, etc.).

  • Prepare special and operational budgetary reports.

  • Complete and distribute didactic schedules for class (include classroom assignments).

  • Oversee Program Library accumulation.

  • Review and develop Program budget and make recommendations on Program spending

  • Monitor Program revenue and expenditures.

About the Department of Radiology:


The Department of Radiology includes 69 staff physicians, 22 PhD researchers, 27 fellows, and 36 residents. The Radiology enterprise expands across four campuses throughout the Iowa City corridor. We also serve Stead Family Children’s Hospital located at the Medical Center University campus, as well as several UI urgent cares, clinics, and additional affiliates. Our enterprise operates 12 clinical CT scanners including two Alpha photon-counting scanners , 14 clinical MR scanners including four 3T machines, and the first Siemens Free.Max MR to be housed in an Emergency Department in the United States. We operate three time-of-flight (TOF) PET/CT systems and anticipate receiving a Siemens PET/MR in fall 2025.


The Department of Radiology plays an integral role in the Iowa Institute of Biomedical Imaging (IIBI), a collaboration of nearly 100 faculty and staff within the colleges of Engineering, Medicine, and Liberal Arts (https://www.iibi.uiowa.edu). The facility includes 3T, 3T head only and 7T research scanners.


The Department of Radiology consistently ranks highly in the Blue Ridge Institute NIH rankings, having received over $10 million in NIH funding last year. We host nine research labs and have 37 active phase I and phase II clinical trials.

Medical Physics Division:


The University of Iowa is seeking a medical physicist for a faculty appointment in the Medical Physics Division of the Department of Radiation Oncology. A successful Ph.D. candidate will be appointed on the tenure or non-tenure clinical track at the rank of assistant, associate or full professor, and a successful M.S.-prepared candidate will be appointed as a faculty instructor. The medical physicist will join 13 radiation oncologists, 6 radiation oncology residents, 13 faculty medical physicists, 4 medical physics residents, one faculty engineer, 8 dosimetrists, 2 systems administrators, and 1 staff engineer. Responsibilities will include a broad range of clinical service, teaching and research based on the candidate’s interests and qualifications. We are seeking an individual who desires to participate in the standard duties found in a comprehensive radiation therapy program and who has the capability to advance our clinical and/or academic mission through the execution of clinical and/or research projects.


The external beam radiation therapy program is well-established, with three Elekta Versa HD linear accelerators, an Elekta Gamma Knife Icon, and an Elekta Unity MRI linear accelerator. The Department has a strong brachytherapy program, with an Elekta Flexitron high-dose-rate brachytherapy afterloader, intracavitary/interstitial capability for gynecological cases, and low-dose-rate brachytherapy eye plaque implants. A Siemens Vida 3T MRI scanner is in the Department across the hall from the high-dose-rate brachytherapy suite, and cervical cancer HDR treatments are delivered using MR-guidance as the standard of care. Brachytherapy treatment planning is performed using the Elekta Oncentra treatment planning software. The Department is equipped with a 4-D Siemens Biograph PET/CT scanner, a mobile C-arm imager for fluoroscopy, optical and infra-red non-ionizing image guidance systems, and 6-degree-of-freedom robotic patient positioning systems. Specialized capabilities include 4D imaging/treatment planning/delivery, frame-based and frameless stereotactic radiosurgery, flattening-filter-free stereotactic body radiation therapy with gated VMAT, and MRI-guided adaptive radiation therapy. Departmental software includes the Mosaiq oncology information system, Philips Pinnacle (replacement pending), Elekta One Planning (Monaco + MIM), Epic electronic medical record system, and the Varian Velocity image registration and dose accumulation software. The medical physics group also provides coverage at four partner sites, one with an Elekta VersaHD linear accelerator and three with Varian linear accelerators including two TrueBeam systems. Candidates interested in executing complex clinical projects are strongly encouraged to apply.


The Department has three divisions: The Radiation Oncology Clinic, the Medical Physics division, and the Ph.D.-granting Free Radical Radiation Biology division. The Department has developed highly productive interdisciplinary collaborations that have resulted in federal research funding in multiple other departments including Electrical and Computer Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, and Radiology. The Department has a successful research program and has multiple federally funded investigators with grants at the level of R21, R01, and SPORE. An XStrahl Small Animal Radiation Research Platform (SARRP) is available enabling cone-beam-CT-guided radiation therapy research using small animals at the Iowa Institute for Biomedical Imaging facility. A Public Private Partnership (P3) grant was obtained for the installation of a research-dedicated custom FLASH linear accelerator, with electron beam capability initially and with a planned upgrade to x-ray FLASH capability. The FLASH linear accelerator went live with electron capability in May 2025. Candidates with research interests that significantly contribute to the overall departmental academic effort are strongly encouraged to apply.

University of Iowa Stead Family Department of Pediatrics seeks an intensivist. Appointment rank is open and may be to either the tenure track or clinical (non-tenure) track consistent with clinical experience and research interest. Appointment rank to Instructor of Pediatrics (non-tenure) may also be considered. The individual selected will join the Division of Critical Care Medicine to provide patient care, teaching, and consultative services as a pediatrician specializing in pediatric critical care medicine.


The Division of Critical Care is committed to providing excellent clinical care, education of learners at all levels, and the advancement of knowledge through pursuit of biomedical research. Clinical care is provided in a 28-bed combined medical/surgical and cardiac intensive care unit, including highly specialized management of the intensive care population and patients requiring ECMO, renal replacement therapies and VAD support. Annually, our PICU admits approximately 1500+ children. We are a level 1 trauma center and burn center. We have representation from all the pediatric medical and surgical subspecialties. The division presently counts to 14 faculty (3 with further training in Cardiac Intensive Care, 1 with further training in pulmonology), 8 fellowship positions, and 8 nurse practitioners.  Our critical care team is focused on the delivery of excellent clinical care, with patient satisfaction scores consistently greater than the ninetieth percentile. The quality of care provided in our Intensive Care Unit is analyzed by participation in the Virtual Pediatric Intensive Care Unit Performance System (VPS) for benchmarking and data sharing.

University of Iowa Stead Family Department of Pediatrics seeks a Pediatric Critical Care Cardiac Intensivist. Appointment rank is open and may be to either the tenure track or clinical (non-tenure) track consistent with clinical experience and research interest. Appointment rank to Instructor of Pediatrics (non-tenure) may also be considered. The individual selected will join the Division of Critical Care Medicine to provide patient care, teaching, and consultative services.


The Division of Critical Care is committed to providing excellent clinical care to neonatal, pediatric, and young adult patients and their families for the state of Iowa and surrounding areas. Our cardiovascular program is the largest program in the state of Iowa with 300+ annual admissions and 500-600 cardiac catheterization/EP procedures provided by 2 pediatric cardiac surgeons, 2 pediatric interventional cardiologists, and 2 electrophysiologists. Clinical care is provided in a state-of-the art 28-bed combined medical/surgical and cardiac intensive care unit in a multidisciplinary care approach in collaboration with our cardiology and cardiovascular surgery team. Our program delivers the full range of services including highly specialized care to children with heart defects including ECMO, VAD support, and a cardiac transplantation program. Our division presently has 14 total faculty with 3 cardiac intensivists, 6 critical care fellows, and 6 – 8 nurse practitioners.  Our cardiac critical care faculty, in collaboration with the pediatric cardiac critical care nurse practitioners and our specialized bedside nursing staff, are focused on the delivery of excellent clinical care, with patient satisfaction scores consistently greater than the ninetieth percentile. The quality of care provided in our Intensive Care Unit is analyzed by participation in the Virtual Pediatric Intensive Care Unit Performance System (VPS), the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS), and the National Pediatric Cardiology Quality Improvement Collaborative (NPC-QIC) for benchmarking and data sharing.
